Fall is one of the most magical times of the year in Northern Michigan, with its vibrant foliage, crisp air, and endless opportunities for family fun. As a Northern Michigan Family Photographer, I love capturing the beauty of this season through both the changing landscape and the joy on my clients' faces during family sessions. If you're looking for fun ways to embrace fall with your family, here are some of the best seasonal finds to check out this year:
1. Gallagher's Farm Market and Bakery
There’s nothing that says fall quite like a trip to Gallagher's Farm Market and Bakery. This family-run market is a must-visit for seasonal produce, delicious baked goods, and homemade apple cider. Families can pick out fresh apples, pumpkins, and even indulge in some of the best pies around. It's the perfect spot to stock up on fall essentials while enjoying the cozy, nostalgic vibe of a traditional farm market. And don’t forget to take a few snapshots with your little ones surrounded by pumpkins—it's an ideal setting for some candid fall family photos.
2. Jacobs Farm
For those who love a mix of outdoor fun and farm-to-table goodness, Jacobs Farm is an unbeatable fall destination. Located just outside Traverse City, this farm offers not only seasonal produce but also a beautiful setting for family activities. You can take a wagon ride through the vibrant autumn fields, pick pumpkins, and explore the corn maze. Afterward, relax at their restaurant, enjoying delicious farm-fresh meals. As a Northern Michigan Family Photographer, I can’t recommend this place enough for a relaxed, family-friendly environment perfect for fall photos and lasting memories.
3. Pumpkin Patch at Traverse City Main Library
If you’re looking for a fun and festive fall event, don’t miss the Pumpkin Patch at the Traverse City Main Library on October 14th. This family-friendly gathering is perfect for little ones to pick out pumpkins and decorate them on-site. In addition to the pumpkin decorating fun, there will be live music from local artist Brotha James and a performance by the Dilly Songs Duo, adding a lively backdrop to the afternoon. The event will also feature autumn-inspired crafts for kids, offering a creative and hands-on experience. The Pumpkin Patch is a delightful way to celebrate fall while spending time with family, all in the heart of Traverse City. It’s a prime spot for capturing fun, candid moments of your children enjoying this seasonal tradition!
4. More Than Four 5.04K Run/Walk
Mark your calendars for September 21st and join the More Than Four Foundation for their inaugural 5.04K Run/Walk, uniting the community to recognize and support children battling cancer. The unique distance—5.04 kilometers—reflects the fact that only 4% of federal cancer research funding goes to pediatrics. The extra 0.04 kilometers in the race symbolizes how small that 4% really is.
Founded by five-year-old Conor Rigan, who has undergone six brain surgeries after being diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor at just six months old, the event is not only a race but a celebration of resilience. 100% of the net proceeds from the event will go directly to pediatric cancer research and support for families. Families are encouraged to join, with all ages welcome, and wagons or strollers recommended for young children. This race will not be timed, allowing everyone to enjoy the experience at their own pace. Participants who sign up by August 25th will receive a race shirt.
After the race, continue the fun at the family-friendly after-party at Brady's Bar patio, where you can enjoy a pulled pork sandwich meal for $15, with all proceeds going to the More Than Four Foundation. This is a wonderful opportunity to make a difference while enjoying the beauty of Northern Michigan in the fall.
5. Live Music Fridays at Shady Lane Cellars
End your fall days with some relaxation and live entertainment at Shady Lane Cellars. Their Live Music Fridays are the perfect way to unwind with family and friends, set against the backdrop of stunning vineyards and autumnal views. While this might be more for parents to enjoy, kids are welcome to tag along, and the open-air atmosphere allows everyone to soak in the beauty of fall. Whether you're enjoying a glass of wine or simply taking in the scenery, the combination of music and nature offers a picturesque moment for your Northern Michigan fall experience.
You can also explore the vineyards, enjoy a complimentary glass of wine, and grab those beautiful fall portraits during our Vineyard Mini Session on September 6th and 8th. More information can be found here here.
